Ansonborough Inn Review

accommodations     restaurants     history    events   tours

The Ansonborough Inn, located just a few blocks up from the bustling corner of East Bay and Market Streets in downtown Charleston Historic District is a delightful combination of the intimacy of the antique inn while providing the open and spacious feel of a larger hotel. Formerly a paper warehouse in the early 1900's, the building has undergone many transformations to bring it to the comfortable quarters it is today.

The high, exposed beamed ceiling in the lobby creates the illusion that one has entered a private courtyard and as one looks up, each level of the inn and the entrance to every suite glows with gas lamps. The masculinity and intensity of the exposed rough-hewn timbers is vastly softened by large oriental rugs, live green plants, rich and gleaming hardwood floors, inviting, soft leather furniture and original oil paintings crafted by artisans with not just a little talent. The solid antique wood interior is uniform from lobby to rooftop and also in many of the 45 rooms, showing a glimpse of brick to remind one of the origins of the building. But make no mistake; the Ansonborough Inn is no warehouse. The lobby and common areas are outfitted with appropriately oversized and beautiful antiques along with some interesting showpieces likely from some sea captain's travels about the world giving further impression of a site filled with the secrets of history. The bar exudes an atmosphere of a men's pub with an added touch of luxury with stately paneling and fireplace.

The individual suites offer a variety of choices in size and layout but every room, as can be determined from names such as, The Admiral Suite, The King Suite, are an experience in well-appointed comfort. Amenities found in varying combinations for the guestrooms include a marble bath, European showerheads, plantation shutters, king bed with sumptuous linens, walk-in closet, kitchen facilities including granite tile flooring, wet sink, microwave oven, refrigerator and glassware. Some rooms come with a loft or a second bedroom and all are equipped with high-speed wireless Internet. The Ansonborough Inn includes the added touches of pampering guests with a deluxe continental breakfast and afternoon wine and cheese. For the working guest there are conference facilities and a road office in the business center. And for the health conscious leisure guest as well as the dynamic occupational traveler, the fitness facilities are also available.

In close proximity to the waterfront and with its solid wooden structure and seascape artwork the décor can put one in mind of early seafaring while at the same time, offers the sense that the old gas-lighted streets of England or early America were the model for the recent updates and renovations. Both are in evidence in the names of the suites provided above but no matter, the combination of land and sea, old world and new, antique inn or hotel, the Ansonborough Inn creates just the right balance for a comfortable stay in solid and stately opulence. The location of this inn, in the Charleston Historic District at 21 Hasell Street, provides a variety of restaurants from high-end to on-the-go quick serve within walking distance as well as convenience to all the sites the city has to offer.
