The Wentworth Mansion
perhaps pushes the limits of what would be
considered a bed and breakfast, but it's such
a rare treasure, I'm including it. The
Wentworth Mansion holds Charleston South
Carolina's only AAA 5 Diamond rating of any
hotel, inn or bed and breakfast.
The standards to receive
and maintain this rating go beyond what most
people can comprehend, but the word
perfection comes to mind. It's hard to even
imagine the work and expense involved in
restoring a 19th century mansion to
near-perfect condition, but Charming Inns has
pulled it off. (Visit
Wentworth Mansion) I've not had the
opportunity to spend the night and only spent
about 30 minutes on premise, so it's
impossible for me to translate and
communicate the majesty one might experience
from an actual stay.
They offer a full
breakfast, as well as treats from the quite
opulent and decadent Circa 1886 restaurant
that is located in what was once the carriage
house. Speaking of Circa 1886, my wife and I
did have the opportunity to dine here during
one of our more recent treks downtown, and
this too approached perfection. Service,
presentation, taste, and atmosphere all
combined to make this a deliciously memorable
experience. Rates start at $415/night on most
weekends, but remember…you're getting
it all!
So, if you consider the
average price of a four-diamond hotel room at
about $329 (and most 3-diamonds at $275), and
then add a gourmet breakfast for two ($30),
two glasses of wine ($18) and parking
(usually $16… but included at Wentworth
Mansion) Wentworth Mansion is right on the
money. Think of the stories you'll have to
tell your friends.
